The first criteria to consider while selecting keywords is their search volume. The search volume of a keyword refers to its the number of times users searched information using that particular keyword.
Ideally you should pick keywords with a search volume of at least 1000 searches per month. Otherwise, the keyword would fail to generate substantial amount of traffic for your web page. You can also choose keywords with millions of searches.
However, it is not important that you will end up generating more traffic if you choose a keyword with a higher search volume. This is because higher the search volume of a keyword the grater is its usage. This means you will be competing with many other web pages that use the same keyword for user attention. So, the best option is to pick a keyword with a sizeable search volume but lesser competition. It is best to look for a keyword with a monthly search volume of 1000 to a million.
You have to repeat a keyword several times within the text of your article. Using the word repeatedly in your write up is not a good idea. So, you should find synonyms of that word. Use words that mean the same in different places in your text. In addition, you can use related words and terms. For example, if the keyword you are using is ‘fashion’, try to use mode, style, vogue, trend in your written text. Some other related terms are; dress, shopping, design, beauty, clothing, etc.
You can also use ‘long tail keywords’ while searching for keywords. Long tail keywords are a set for 3 or more words. It can also be referred to as a phrase related to the keyword. A great advantage of using phrases is that they have lesser competition than keywords. Be careful of the words you use in phrases. Ensure that they do not contain too many words that are common, such as from, by, at etc. The phrase should be popular and related to the keyword.
The best suggestion related to keyword selection is to always be creative. For instance, you can include plural terms of your keyword also. Some people tend to use plural form of words while conducting web search, while others prefer singular form.
While choosing keywords, make sure that they are related to the main subject matter of your website. If you pick keywords haphazardly, that are disparate from the topic of your website, your page will not get a higher ranking. So, the keyword should fit in the keyword string or cloud that is pertinent for your website.
